Digital photo rules for the US visa

The US Department of State asks for a square digital photo between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, saved as a JPEG of 240 KB or less. The photo must be in color, taken in the last six months, against a plain white or off-white background, with your head filling roughly half of the image. Always confirm the current rules on the official State Department photo page before you submit.

How to make your photo fit

  1. Take a straight-on photo against a white wall in even light, with some space above your head.
  2. Drop it into the box above. The US visa preset is already selected: 600 × 600 px, 240 KB.
  3. SizeRight crops from the center. If your face isn't centered, crop the photo on your phone first so your face is in the middle.
  4. Download the JPG and upload it to the DS-160.

Questions

Why was my US visa photo rejected?

Common reasons are a file over 240 KB, a photo that isn't square, shadows on the background, or glasses. SizeRight fixes size and shape; lighting and pose are up to the photo itself.

Can I use a selfie?

Selfies are often rejected because the camera is too close and distorts the face. Ask someone to take the photo from about 1.2 m away.

Do you upload my photo?

No. SizeRight runs entirely in your browser. Your photo is never sent to a server, so passport and ID photos stay on your device.

Is SizeRight free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark. The site is supported by ads.
